The Well is the home of Farnworth Baptist Church; but it is much more than that.
For many years we have carried a vision of a church building which can help us to meet the needs of the local community. When the church first purchased the building in Trafford Street it was very dark and somewhat unwelcoming with padlocked doors and grills over all of the windows. With financial assistance from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and Biffaward we have been able to redevelop the building to provide a bright and airy space which is open to the local community.
The building was officially opened on Saturday 12 March 2011 by Councillor Noel Spencer and Carol Blunt who has attended the church for over 25 years.
When it was discovered that in Victorian times a local well used by the general public was capped and the water piped to nearby Darley Hall the leadership of the church determined to "uncap the well" and allow life giving water to once again flow into the community.
The Well is currently open from 9.30 until 2.30 Tuesday to Friday and offers a Coffee Shop, counselling service, welfare and benefits advice, employability skills and other community learning and management opportunities, and a quiet place to sit and reflect. Meeting rooms are also available to hire.
